How overtime pay is calculated

Regular pay is hourly rate × regular hours. Overtime pay is hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours. Double time uses its own multiplier. Total pay is the three pieces added together.

Many places use 1.5× after 40 hours in a week or after 8 hours in a day. Some contracts use 2× on holidays. This tool does not apply a specific labour law. Set the hours and multipliers your job actually uses.

In Canada, overtime rules are set by each province. In the United States, federal overtime is generally 1.5× after 40 hours for non-exempt staff, with extra state rules. Always check your employment standards office or HR policy.

Common questions

Is overtime always time-and-a-half?

No. Many jobs use 1.5×, some use 2×, and some salaried roles are exempt. Use the multiplier your contract names.

Does this include taxes?

No. This is gross pay only. Use a payroll or take-home estimator if you need net pay.

Can I include daily overtime?

Yes. Put daily overtime hours in the overtime box and holiday hours in double time.
